Romeldale/CVM (California Variegated Mutant) Sheep
We searched the various breeds of sheep to find a breed whose wool would blend well with our fine alpaca fleece. We wanted to produce a quality product for fiber artists and hand spinners. When we discovered the Romeldale/CVM breed, we knew we had found what we were looking for. Romeldale/CVM wool is just as fine as or finer than alpaca and comes in a wide variety of natural colors which get darker and softer as they age. The sheep are hardy and easy to raise, have strong twinning, easy lambing, and provide a good meat carcass. In addition to these characteristics, the breed is on the endangered breed list of the American Livestock Breed Conservancy.
The California Variegated Mutant (CVM) is a mutation of the Romeldale breed which was
developed in the early 1900’s by A.T. Spencer. The Romeldale breed, which is white and natural colored, was created by crossing Romney rams with Rambouillet ewes. The Sexton family of California during the 1940’s and 1950’s had the highest quality Romeldale flock and sold the wool exclusively to the Pendleton Mills. In the 1960’s, Glen Eidman, maintained a flock of purebred Romeldales and found a multi colored ewe lamb in his flock. Mr. Eidman continued to select for the multi (variegated) colored lambs when he had a multi colored ram lamb born in his flock two years after the ewe. The CVM breed was then launched with this pair of mutated Romeldales. CVM’s have distinctive “badger” markings. Over fifteen years, the Eidman family developed the CVM. The flock was
partially dispersed upon Glen Eidman’s retirement.
Today, there are a “handful” of breeders committed to preserving the Romeldale/CVM breed. We had our first shearing Spring 2008 and were very pleased with the quality of the wool. We sell raw wool and will blend wool with alpaca fleece to make luxury yarn that is for sale. Our sheep are covered with matilda coats all year to ensure that the wool is clean and free of debris. Our Romeldale/CVM sheep are registered with the American Romeldale/CVM Association. Read more about the Romeldale/CVM on the association website. www.arcainc.org
